By the time I was 29 years old, I was living in an oceanside apartment that overlooked the palm islands in Dubai, I had a new convertible car and a designer wardrobe; I went on five-star vacations, dined at Michelin Star restaurants and I was a partner in a branding agency.

I was a year ahead of schedule on achieving my “by the time I’m 30 vision.” I had checked all the boxes of the things that I thought would make me happy and yet I was miserable. I had everything I always wanted and by society’s definition I was quite successful, yet in my heart I knew something was missing.

I just didn’t know what that something was.

So, I started asking myself those big existential questions like:

  • Why am I here?
  • What impact am I meant to leave on this world?

I sat through the discomfort of the unknown for years, going deeper and peeling back the layers of the onion but no matter what I did or where I went these questions always found me. I had a sense something was missing. Something big.

At the time, I didn’t know what I know now. That I was searching for success in everything outside of me and yet everything I yearned for was always right there within me waiting for me to find it.

I found my answers.

I awakened to what was missing.

I discovered what I was looking for.

And in the process, I redefined my vision for success.

Here’s are the top two things I learned:

Put your intuition first, always.

Imagine you’re looking at water spiraling down a drain in the clockwise direction. Its direction represents the flow of energy in our society today and all of our societal beliefs and expectations that go along with it (for example, my illusions of success I mentioned above). Yet, I didn’t find fulfillment traveling in that direction so I needed to switch directions.

When you really tune into your intuition, especially at the beginning, it’s leading you in the opposite direction that you’re traveling in all along. This inevitably brings up fear because it’s counter-clockwise to everything you know. Yet, it’s where I found all the the answers I was looking for.

Following your intuition with a relentless conviction is how you truly overcome your fears.

Your story is your impact

I don’t care how many subscribers you have on your email list or how much you made on your latest launch, the question of “why am I here” will eventually catch up with you. The best answers are always the simplest and believe me it’s simple, just look at your story and you will find everything you’re looking for.

An inner critic coach once told me that at the core of it, we all believe on some level consciously or subconscious that we are “not good enough” or that we are “not lovable.” It’s the collective human story that we all share. Yet, it manifests itself differently in each of our lives, and it is in that uniqueness of our stories where our highest calling lies.

It’s just a matter of peeling back the layers of the onion on your story and you will find the answers you’re looking for. In other words, you’re already perfect just the way you are and when you learn to love yourself enough, your purpose will be right there waiting for you to find it.
